about me
Oniosun Victoria Erioluwa (b. 1998 Oyo, Nigeria). She is a graduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife where she obtained her Bachelor's degree in fine and applied arts. Her creative is expressed primarily through painting with a major focus in Oil on Canvas
The figures in her paintings are depicted through simplification and abstraction; as exactness or realism is seen as being of lesser importance to the idea or inspiration behind each work. Her artworks are heavily influenced by her emotions which is brought about through her daily life and personal experiences has a woman navigating life alone and in the company of others , all these come alive on her canvas. She now strives to capture scenes with her palette knives wherein expressions and body language remain un-detailed yet communicate volumes about our individual and collective life experiences, while exploring the themes of Companionship, identity and Mental Health. She encourages the viewer to make connections with their own memories.
Her works show a remarkable level of artistic expression and have been presented in several exhibitions including 2022, “LATITUDE OF EXPRESSION” Group Art Exhibition, Mitochondrai Gallery, Houston, Texas, 2023, “The Show will Go On” Virtual Group Exhibition, Harmer Contemporary Art Gallery, London. 2023, “The First Step” Group Art Exhibition, 2022/2023 African Female Artist Mentorship Program (AFAMP) Cohort Exhibition at The Art Pantheons Gallery, Lagos amongst others. ARTIST STATEMENT
In my abstracted figurative paintings, I seeks to emphasize the worth and importance of Companionship through my visual. With my medium of painting which is mostly Oil on canvas and sometimes acrylic there is an element of surprise with each painting allowing me to express my artistic vision myself without limitation. Interaction between women has always been my main theme.
Focusing on the representation and appreciation of the female gender. Growing up, I’ve always felt the loneliness that comes with been the only female in my family who is not particularly close to her mum. My paintings has been a huge part of me and a part where I could express myself while offering a space for individual libration, while interrogating the construction and constraints of Companionship, mental health and identity.
Strongly influenced by emotions derived from my introspection of life experiences, including stories about women. My palette-knife scenes attempt to create narrative that speaks to the female experiences, in which the facial expressions and body language seem undetailed yet speak volumes and depth about our personal and collective life experiences. My subject are unapologetic women who are of great importance to one another. The focus on women urges the viewers to learn to embrace our unique journey, value amd strive for confidence in appreciating our growth and who we are.
